Prompt one is the one to protect. In the Learning and Instruction experiment, restating the lecture in your own words (a cognitive strategy) improved learning; the metacognitive prompts about confusion helped only through that restating. My own first journaling prompt came from a teacher at school, who had us open each entry with "What I learned today ...", and prompt one is that line with the summary squeezed out of it.
For a reading, prompt four becomes "Which sentence stayed, and why?"

Tuesday, Week 4. Education 201. Lecture: cognitive load theory.
1. What happened: Working memory holds only a few things at once. Materials that split attention between a diagram and a separate block of text use up capacity before any learning starts.
2. What came up: Defensiveness. I kept picturing my own presentation slides, which do exactly this.
3. The story I am telling myself: That I already design things badly and it is too late to change. Written down, that is a mood.
4. One connection: The worked-example effect. A solved problem beside an unsolved one made the principle click, and that is how my best maths textbook was laid out.

Wednesday, Week 4. Education 201. Reading: Freire, Pedagogy of the Oppressed, chapter 2.
1. What happened: Freire calls conventional teaching "banking": the teacher deposits information, the student stores it, and neither questions it. Against it he sets a dialogue in which both sides learn.
2. What came up: Recognition, then tiredness at the footnotes.
3. The story I am telling myself: That I am a banked student, good at storing deposits and bad at questioning them. Partly true.
4. Which sentence stayed, and why: "The more students work at storing the deposits entrusted to them, the less they develop the critical consciousness." It describes every exam I have done well in.
5. Question to carry: Where in this course am I still banking?
Thursday, Week 4. Chemistry 110. Lab: titration of an unknown acid.
1. What happened: Ran the titration three times. Overshot the endpoint twice by adding too fast near the colour change; the third run was clean and close to the class average.
2. What came up: Embarrassment; the demonstrator stood behind me for run two.
3. The story I am telling myself: That I am clumsy at practical work. The record says something narrower: I rush when I feel watched.
4. One connection: The lecture on Tuesday. Watching the burette, the colour and the demonstrator at once is split attention; on run three I ignored the demonstrator and it worked.
5. Question to carry: What is the slowest sensible drop rate in the last half-millilitre?
Adjust two prompts by discipline
- Sciences and labs: prompt five becomes "What would I do differently under uncertainty next time?"
- Humanities and readings: prompt four becomes the sentence that stayed, as above.
- Social sciences: prompt three also covers assumptions about the people being studied.
Add a weekly review page
At the end of each week, reread the entries and answer three questions on one page: What pattern appeared? What am I avoiding writing about? What do I carry into next week? The Week 4 page for the entries above, again invented:

Pattern: I do worse when watched (the titration) and I tell myself I am bad at the whole thing (the slides, the lab) when the evidence is one habit.
Avoiding: The Freire question. I asked where I am still banking and did not answer. The honest answer is statistics, where I copy the method and never ask why it works.
Carry into Week 5: Ask one "why does this work" question in statistics and write the answer as an entry. Slow the last half-millilitre.
Set up the journal and keep it going
The setup is three decisions, made once.
- One notebook or file per course, so a course's entries sit together before an assessment.
- Date, course and event type at the top of every entry.
- An index page at the front where every prompt-five question is copied: the list of what you still do not understand, and the most useful page in the notebook.
When to write depends on what fades fastest: labs the same day, because the details of what went wrong go first; lectures within 48 hours, while your confusion is still distinct from the lecturer's explanation; readings before the seminar, so the entry gives you something to say.
Two things kill the habit. Perfectionism: an entry written badly on a tired Thursday is worth more than a good one planned and skipped. No-time days: write prompt five alone and move on; the index page still gets its question. If you have nothing to say after a lecture, that is the entry: "Present, but disconnected." After a few weeks you will see when it comes.
Change the template when it stops working
If every entry reads like a summary, cut prompt one to one sentence for a week. If entries take more than fifteen minutes, drop prompts three and five for the sciences. If you must hand the journal in, keep a private version and submit an edited copy; a student who feels observed performs for the reader.
Why an Academic Journal Matters
Notes record what was taught and can be borrowed from anyone. The journal records what you made of it and what you still do not understand. By week ten the index page is a revision plan in your own words. In Park's 2024 study, 79.81 percent of first-year students said the reading journal helped their learning, alongside lectures.
Short and regular is what makes it work. In the Frontiers trial the diary took about six minutes, and the gains in self-efficacy and resilience appeared at four weeks and had not appeared at two. An entry a day for a semester is the practice.
